In an automatic lathe the turret slide (26) (Fig. 1, not shown) can be moved to an initial stop position by an adjustment mechanism (40) independent of the normal actuating drive (28), (32) for the turret slide. The movement to the initial stop position can be controlled by a switch (74) on a bar stock feed mechanism (48) so that when a new bar is fed from a magazine (50) the turret (26) is advanced towards the spindle housing (12) so that the new bar is positioned for an initial shearing operation on its un-machined end face by tool slides (22) or (20). The adjustment mechanism (40) comprises a cylinder (42) and piston (44) and may operate against a return spring or be piston operated in both directions. A switch (70) is operated when the end of a bar is adjacent the spindle housing (12), to reverse rollers (64), (66), and allow a new bar to feed from the magazine (50).
