A master drive unit 1 is maintained at a set speed by regulator 2 and drives a tachometer 3, a slave drive 4, consisting of an electromagnetic coupling, being associated with tachometer 6. Signals from the two tachometers are compared in circuit 5, the error signal being fed to servo amplifier 7 for controlling the speed of the slave drive. The ratio between the speeds of master and slave may be varied by adjusting the proportions of the tachometer signals supplied to the comparison circuit. A positional correction signal is provided for the slave system by synchros 8, 9, coupled respectively to the master and slave output shafts, the voltage output from the synchro 9 being a function of the positional misalignment between the shafts. This output is supplied to the input of the amplifier 7, either directly, or after rectification in a phase or sense detector 12. The phase or sense of the signal is such as to cause an increase in slave torque if the slave is lagging behind the master. When there is a number of slave units, each succeeding slave unit may be referred with the previous slave unit for speed control, whilst the slave synchros are all referred to the master synchro.
