Abstract

1,057,863. Controlling missiles. BOFORS A.B. June 28, 1963 [June 29, 1962], No. 25887/63. Heading B7G. An air vehicle, such as a missile or a rocket, comprises at least one pair of members, each member being movable between first and second opposite end positions for altering the flight of the vehicle in each of said positions, guidance means for cyclically urging each member towards its end positions such that during a first period of each cycle one of the members of the or each pair is urged towards its first position and the other member of the same pair is urged towards its second position and during the remainder of each cycle said one member is urged towards its second position and the other member is urged towards its first position for altering the direction of flight of the air vehicle, and also roll correction means for urging said one of members of the or each pair towards its first position and the other member of the same pair towards its first position for rotating the air vehicle about its longitudinal axis. A transmitter 1 generates a signal which is transmitted to an aerial vehicle 1A over wires 2, 3 so that there is a potential Ea between wire 2 and earth and a potential Ea<SP>1</SP> between wire 3 and earth. The signal on wire 2 passes through a resistor 4 and a wire 5 to a multi-vibrator 6 and then via wire 7 to the coil 8 of an actuator solenoid 9 to operate a pivoted aerodynamic spoiler 10 which is normally retained by spring 12 in the dotted-line position. Similarly the signal on wire 3 is transmitted through resistor 13, multi-vibrator 15 and an actuator solenoid 18 to operate a spoiler 19. The signal Ea<SP>1</SP> is also transmitted over wire 22 to a network 23 to produce an output signal Eb over wire 24 to rectifier 25 and over wire 26 to a multi-vibrator 27 which time-displaces the signal one halfcycle. This signal is transmitted via wire 28 to a unit 30 containing a saw-tooth generator connected in series with a multi-vibrator and also via wire 29 to a unit 31 constructed as unit 30. A roll potentiometer 32 associated with a gyro (not shown), is connected to a source (not shown) of direct current and also through wires 36, 37 to a stabilizing network 35. A contact member 33 is connected to network 35 and when there is no roll deviation this assumes a mid-position on potentiometer 32. Upon roll deviation network 35 emits either a voltage + Ee over line 39 to unit 30 or a voltage- Ee over line 38 to unit 31 to initiate in either unit the sawtooth generator to produce a sawtooth voltage, which when it reaches a predetermined value, causes the unit 30 to emit a signal Eh<SP>1</SP> taken out through terminal 41 on unit 30. Similarly, signal Ei is taken out from unit 31 by terminal 42. The signal Eh<SP>1</SP> is fed over line 44 to resistors 45 and 46 and the signal Ei is fed over line 47 to resistors 48, 49 whereby supplementary signals dependent upon roll angle of the aerial vehicle influence the operation of the spoilers in such a way that the roll signal dominates the command signal. The signals Ea and Ea<SP>1</SP> can be combined in any convenient way by networks 30 and 31 if it is desired to give the guidance signal priority over the roll stabilizing signal, or vice-versa, or if it is desired to give them equal priority. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 904,496.
