Abstract
The invention comprises 16a - and 16b -methyl - 19 - nor - D 4,6 - pregnadiene - 3,20-diones and the preparation of these and the 16-unsubstituted compound by treating 19-hydroxy-progesterone or the corresponding 16a - or 16b -methyl compound with a benzaquinone having an oxidation-reduction potential of less than -0.5 v., oxidizing the thus produced 19-hydroxy-D 6-dehydro-progesterone compound with chromium trioxide to give the corresponding 19-oic acid and decarboxylating this by refluxing with a mineral acid in a C1- 8 aliphatic alcohol. The novel steroids of the invention, which are stated to be very potent anti-estrogenic and progestational agents, may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,007,757 and 1,007,758.
