Abstract

Acid-esters of phosphoric acid and oxyalkylation products thereof are prepared by: (A) reacting ethylene glycol with H3PO4/P2O5 and reacting the resulting acid ester with propylene oxide; (B) reacting P2O5 with propylene glycol/n-butanol and oxypropylating the product; (C) reacting P2O5 with ethylene glycol/n-butanol and oxypropylating the product; (D) reacting n-butanol with P2O5 to give a mixture of mono- and di-butyl phosphates and then oxypropylating. Various popylene oxide/H3PO4 reaction products are also prepared.ALSO:A process for preparing a cellulated polyurethane comprises reacting a mixture of (1) a polyol containing at least 3 OH groups and consisting essentially of C, H and O; (2) an organic polyisocyanate containing an average of 2.3 to 6 isocyanato groups and containing essentially no urethane linkages; and (3) a phosphorus-containing polyol which is prepared by reacting at least one monohydric or dihydric alcohol and an acid containing a phosphoryl or thiophosphoryl group or an anhydride thereof to form an acid ester and then reacting the acid ester with an alkylene oxide containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms (includes styrene oxide), and, if desired, (4) a catalyst for urethane formation, and (5) a blowing agent. A surfactant (6) may also be present. Suitable isocyanates (2) include diphenylmethane diisocyanate (said to have an isocyanate functionality of about 2-5), compounds of formula OCN,R(CY2R1-NCO)n, where R and R1 are arylene, Y is H, alkyl or aryl and n is 1-3 to 4, and "polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate," and these may be used alone or with various diisocyanates. The phosphorus-containing polyols (3) include propylene oxide condensate of acid phosphates derived from ethylene glycol, propylene glycol/n-butanol, ethylene glycol/n-butanol, and of a mixture of mono- and di-n-butyl phosphates. The other polyol (4) may be n oxyalkylated sugar or glucoside or oxyalkylated polyphenols such as condensates of phenols and aldehydes or ketones. The blowing agent if present may be carbon dioxide and/or a chlorofluorocarbon. Master batches comprising the components other than the isocyanate may be stabilized with polyols containing t-amino groups as disclosed in Specification 1,057,257.
