Abstract

A method of making an incendiary device for testing the resistance to electric arcs of insulating materials, comprises mixing inorganic chemical substances, which react exothermically on attaining the ignition temperature, with a synthetic resin binder and a solvent to form a paste, dividing the paste into measured quantities which are pressed into moulds with an embedded ignition wire, and removing the mouldings from the moulds and drying the mouldings in vacuo. The paste may comprise 50 parts thermite, 3 parts binder, and 10 parts solvent (parts by weight), and is punch-pressed in a mould, a 0.3 to 0.8 ohm ignition wire with attached leads being suitably positioned in the paste. The moulded body is dried at 50 DEG to 90 DEG C. in a vacuum chamber.
