Abstract

A hydrocarbon binding agent contains an elastomeric copolymer of two or more mono-olefins, or of one or more mono-olefins and an unsaturated endocyclic hydrocarbon containing a bridge formed of one or more methylene groups. The hydrocarbon binding agent may be straight-run bitumen, cut-back bitumen, road oil, tar, or a petroleum derived resin. Specified unsaturated endocyclic hydrocarbons are norbornene, 5-methylene norbornene and dicyclopentadiene. Incorporation of the copolymer into the binding agent is aided by mixing the copolymer with a flux for the binding agent, e.g. a distillate, solvent extract, raffinate or coal tar, or by dissolving the copolymer in a solvent such as trichloroethylene or monochlorobenzene and finally removing the solvent. In the example an ethylene/propylene copolymer rubber is incorporated into a straight-run bitumen with the aid of a phenol type extract of a Tia Jana crude.
