Abstract
1,057,141. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 8, 1964 [Jan. 9, 1963], No. 1090/63. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel aasembly comprises a spaced cluster of elongate fuel elements arranged about a datum axis and having a resilient grid structure, of two grids formed of thin webs, to laterally locate the fuel element ends. The fuel elements are all weded to a top grid and, to provide for unequal thermal expansion of fuel elements in different zones of the fuel assembly, the grid structure is utilized at the bottom of the assembly. The resilient grid is formed from two parts, 4 and 5 (Figs. 5a, 5b, not shown), the part 4 comprising two rings of pitch diameter corresponding to fuel element rings X and Z, the rings being joined by three radial webs 22c. The part 5 carries all the locating holes for the ring Y of fuel elements, plus an inner ring mounted below and concentric with the ring X on part 4, and three radial webs, and each carrying two fuel element support holes for ring Z. The two grid parts are spaced apart by three separators 17. The fuel elements in rings X and Z are welded to the part 4, and those in ring Y to the part 5. The part 5 is welded at 36 (Fig. 2b), to a central tube 3 which extends through the fuel assembly and is welded to the top grid. The part 4 is welded to the fuel element spigots which include the part 5 at the six close-fit holes in the web end-pieces 23f.
