1,057,050. Measuring by ultrasonic waves. MASCHINENFABRIK DEUTSCHLAND A.G. Dec. 19, 1963 [Dec. 19, 1962], No. 50203/63. Heading H4D. [Also in Division G4] Measurements of wheel rim diameter, flange profile, wheel toe-in &c. are made on a wheel set 8, Fig. 1 (not shown), by pulsed ultrasonic transmitter-receivers 60 . . . 65 mounted on a measuring jig 50, the wheel set having first been centred by tail stocks 21, 22. The wheel set is rotated in the measuring position by a friction roller. In the sequence of operations the wheel set is rolled along rails 11, 12 into recesses 9, 10, a roller 14 and a sensor 15 are moved by the wheel rim the latter remaining in a position corresponding to a flange diameter R, the sensor 15 being connected to a potentiometer 18. Tail stocks 21, 22 are moved together vertically by a motor 24 the number of revolutions of a connected shaft 25 being counted photo-electrically utilizing a perforated disc 37; the vertical movement of tail stock 21 controls a potentiometer 34, gear transmission ratios to potentiometers 18, 34 being made such that identical potentiometers can be used. If the positions of the wipers of the potentiometers agree the tail stocks stop. Sleeves 35, 36 are then moved horizontally so that centres 43, 44 support the wheel set, rails 11, 12 are moved outwardly and position sensors 45, 46 are rotated to come into contact with front surfaces 47, 48 of the wheel set axle to determine its axial position. Next, an hydraulic cylinder 49 moves measuring jig 50 into position under the wheel set, see also Fig. 3 (not shown), the final position of the jig being when pistons 53, 54 abut respective stops 55, 56. Each of the measuring heads 58, 59 has three ultrasonic transmitter-receivers, each coupled via a water jet to the part to be measured, Fig. 4 (not shown). The transit time of echo pulses is measured digitally and the measurement is stored and printed. When measurements are completed the measuring jig &c. are returned to their original positions and the wheel set removed by rotatable levers, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown).
