In a method of setting a tubular knitted stocking of thermoplastic yarn on a contractible former, the unset stocking is put on the expanded former and shrunk by the setting treatment to leg shape while simultaneously the former is gradually contracted to that shape. As shown the former is flat and comprises a leg shaped portion 1 having an additional portion 2 pivotable about a bolt 4 into or out of a slot in the portion 1. The portion 2 is normally urged away from the portion 1 by a spring 8 but it is moveable into the slot either by pneumatic, hydraulic or mechanical means engaging a hook 6 on the end of the portion 2 or by the action of a pneumatic piston-cylinder arrangement 9, 10 which engages an arm 2a attached to the portion 2. In operation the tubular partially tapered stocking which may have larger and smaller stitches in its wales, is placed over the similarly shaped expanded former which is then placed in a treatment chamber the temperature and pressure of which are gradually raised to shrink the yarn. By suitable means e.g. by exposing the top of piston 9 to the pressure in the treatment chamber while the other side is opened to the atmosphere, the additional portion 2 is gradually moved into the slot in the portion 1 so that during shrinkage a slight tension is maintained across the width of the stocking at all points along its length. A further moveable portion may be provided e.g. at the front of the portion 1 to take up the initial slack in the vicinity of the instep. The movement of the portion 2 may be adjusted either by changing the area of the piston 9 or by changing the strength of the piston biasing spring 11.
