Abstract
A process for producing filaments or films of amide copolymers comprises copolymerizing a vinyl compound and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid amide bearing a substituent -CH2OR on the amide nitrogen atom, R being hydrogen, alkylol or polyoxyalkylene, in water to form a solution of a copolymer containing at least 50 mole per cent of units of the amide, and extruding the solution and reducing the water content of the extruding stream to form solid filaments, or casting a film from the solution. Vinyl compounds specified are acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate and styrene. The amide may be derived from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or itaconic acid. Polymerization may be initiated with a redox catalyst, e.g. ammonium persulphate/sodium thiosulphate. In forming filaments, the aqueous copolymer solution may be extruded into a coagulant, e.g. an aqueous solution of a salt, such as sodium sulphate, or a water-miscible organic liquid such as methanol or ethanol. The filaments or films can be insolubilized by heating in the presence of an acidic or acidic-forming substance, e.g. ammonium chloride. Acrylonitrile/N - methylolacrylamide copolymers are illustrated in the examples.
