Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1056385/C2/1> wherein R is the aromatic nucleus of a dihydric phenol, which may have one or more aromatic rings and in which such rings may be connected together by non-reactive atoms or groups, and R1 is a divalent radical containing at least two carbon atoms selected from aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, hydrocarbon-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, hydro-carbon ether-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, hydroxy-substituted aliphatic hydro-carbon groups, and hydroxy-substituted hydro-carbon ethers of aliphatic hydrocarbon groups. They may be prepared by reacting together the corresponding mono(hydroxyaliphatic)ether of a dihydric phenol, i.e. HO.R.O.R1.OH, a molar excess of epihalohydrin, and a basic dehydrohalogenating agent in an amount equivalent to the phenolic hydroxyl groups. The hydroxy-aliphatic ether reactants may be prepared by (a) reacting 1 mole of dihydric phenol with 1 mole of an aliphatic chlorohydrin employing sodium hydroxide as a condensing or dehydrohalogenating agent; (b) reacting 1 mole of dihydric phenol with 1 mole of an aliphatic carbonate employing potassium carbonate as the catalyst; or (c) by reacting 1 mole of dihydric phenol with 1 mole of aliphatic monoepoxide.
