Abstract

Hydrocarbons are hydro-cracked in the presence of a three component catalyst comprising (1) a crystalline aluminosilicate having uniform pore openings of at least 6 <\>rA intimately admixed with (2) a porous matrix and containing or supporting (3) a hydrogenation component. The hydrocarbons may comprise gas oils, residual oils, cyclo stocks, whole topped crudes and heavy hydrocarbon fractions derived from the destructive hydrogenation of coals, tars, pitches or asphalts. Typical cracking conditions are: temperature 400-950 DEG F. pressure 100-3000 p.s.i.g. LHSV 0.1-10 and hydrogen/hydrocarbon ratio 2: 80. Examples describe the cracking of gas oil.ALSO:A hydrocracking catalyst comprises a crystalline aluminosilicate having uniform pore openings of at least 6 intimately admixed with a porous matrix and supporting or containing a hydrogenation component. Hydrogenation component is defined as a metal of Groups V, VI or VIII or an oxide or sulphide thereof, if desired in combination, e.g. nickel-tungsten sulphide, CoMoO4 and Co-Mo-sulphide. The porous matrix may be a metal (other than those having hydrogenation activity), a resin, clay, a hydrous oxide such as Al2O3, an inorganic oxide gel or any mixture thereof, e.g. SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-MgO, SiO2-ZrO2, SiO2-ThO2, SiO2-BeO, SiO2-TiO2, SiO2-Al2O3-ThO2, SiO2-Al2O3-ZrO2, SiO2-Al2O3-MgO, SiO2-MgO-ZrO2. The zeolites may be natural or artificial and contain Na+, Ca++ or rare earth cations. The catalyst may be subject to an activating pre treatment at 500-1500 DEG F. in air, nitrogen, hydrogen, flue gas, or helium, after which it may possess a surface area of 100-700 m2/gm.
