Abstract

Bacillus cereus var. galleriae, morphological and cultural characteristics of which are disclosed, is cultivated on an initially sterile liquid medium of pH 6.6 - 7.2 containing specified proportions of maize extract, molasses, glucose or pea hydrolysate, and sunflower oil or spermaceti fat as an anti-foaming agent. On a large scale the fermentation is conducted with intermittent stirring in vats held at a temperature of 30 DEG -31 DEG C. for between 36 and 48 hours, and 0.8-1.0 litre of air is blown through the medium in the vats per minute for each litre of medium. The fermentation is stopped when 90-95% of the cells of the organism have produced spores and the spores have escaped from the cells, and 0.5% of kaolin is then added to the liquid medium. The whole culture is stirred and the kaolin with the spores is separated as a paste which is freeze-dried to 3% moisture content. The freeze-dried material is ground to dust in a ball mill. The dust, further diluted with kaolin or chalk and containing 3 X 109 spores per gram, is applied as an insecticide to flower or vegetable crops.ALSO:An insecticidal dust consists of spores of Bacillus cereus var galleriae (3x109 per gram of dust) and kaolin or chalk. It may be applied, preferably at a temperature of at least 20 DEG C., to flower crops (3-5 Kg. dust per hectare) and vegetable crops (1-3 Kg. dust per hectare), both during the blossoming period and shortly before harvest. In order to increase the efficiency of kill at low temperatures, 0.002-0.005 of DDT or hexachloro-cyclohexane may be included in the dust. Alternatively the spores of Bacillus cereus var. galleriae can be applied directly by spraying.
