Contents, viewing; joints between box bottoms and bodies.-Relates to dishes for the plate culture of bacteria of the type known as Petri dishes. and consists in forming them from a flat sheet of glass with a non-integral rim of metal, cardboard, glass wood, vulcanite, fibre, celluloid, &c. The metal employed may be an aluminium alloy, such as duralumin, or tin, lead, platinum, palladium, or gold. Silver, brass, copper, and zinc may be employed if tinned or gilt. The rims are so formed as not to obscure the exposed surface of the glass. The constructions may be employed as lids for culture dishes or for jars or other uses. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show suitable constructions. Fig. 7 shows a modification of the form shown in Fig. 6; the inner and outer rims k, l fit closely together and are not threaded; a washer m of india-rubber, gutta-percha, fibre, asbestos, or paper uncoated or coated with gelatine, albumen, or varnish is emploved. Cement, when used, may consist of insoluble albumen, collodion, or oxidized linseed oil. The outer rims shown in Figs. 6 and 7 may be omitted if the glass be cemented to the inner rim. Fig. 8 shows a dish which is of similar construction to that shown in Fig. 7, but in which the glass is supported by narrow flanges p on the extended side walls of the outer rim o or by V- shaped grooves therein. The glass in the latter case is bevelled.
