Abstract

Sprayable compositions, for topical oral application, comprise an aqueous solution containing lobeline sulphate and a topically active local anaesthetic. Suitable such anaesthetics are ethyl aminobenzoate (benzocaine), lidocaine, or pramoxine hydrochloride. Other active ingredients may be present, such as a non-toxic bactericide, preferably a quarternary ammonium salt such as cetyl dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride; a surface active agent such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate; and aromatic oils, such as oil of pepermint. Also present may be ethanol, glycerol, buffers such as dibasic sodium phosphate, sweetening agents (e.g. saccharine or sodium cyclamate) and colouring substances. The compositions are useful for reducing the desire for smoking tobacco.
