Abstract

1,055,908. Cellular glass nodules. PITTS. BURGH CORNING CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 23, 1963], No. 30799/64. Heading C1M. A cellular glass nodule comprises a core having a plurality of small uniform cohered glass bubbles and a thin outer skin of vitrified material of composition different from the core glass. The nodules are made by admixing preformed glass particles and a cellulating agent, wetting and forming into discrete pellets, e.g. on a rotating disc, coating with a particulate glass-former refractory oxide, and heating, e.g. in a rotary furnace to cellulate the pellets and form a vitreous surface coating. The pellets may be dried at e.g. 250-350‹ F. before the coating step. The cellulating agent may be e.g. lamp black or coal, or carbon black with or without sodium sulphate. The wetting agent contains a fluxing agent and binder, e.g. sodium silicate. The glass-former may be e.g. Al 2 O 3 .3H 2 O, MgO, CaO, or an oxidized product of BN. The coated pellets may be fired at e.g. 1575-1700‹ F.
