Abstract

1,055,761. Brush filter. GEO. J. MEYER MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 9, 1964 [Feb. 5, 1963; July 1, 1963; Sept. 12, 1963], No. 1047/ 64. Heading BID. An inward flow cylindrical filter element 30", comprising a stack of alternate perforate rings and annular brushes with radial bristles, is intermittently cleaned by rotating at high speed, whereby the bristles straighten out (Figs. 6, 7 not shown), and backwashing with water delivered to central perforate tube 44, the solids being then flushed from the filter housing by jets of water from nozzles 178 directed towards solids discharge line 42". The bristles are metal or plastics, and nozzles 178 are supplied by a pump 174. In other constructions, outside the scope of the invention, the solids discharge line has a rotary screw, driven by the motor which rotates the filter element, and a wiper (142) directs solids towards the screw (Figs. 9-12), or the discharge line merely operates by gravity flow of the backwash water (Figs. 1-8). The filter is used with a bottle washing machine (Fig. 1), and the housing is drained prior to cleaning the filter element. Various control valves may be solenoid operated, and cleaning could automatically follow shutdown of the machine.
