In a fast reactor having a cylindrical core, a cylinder of reflecting material is placed along the core central axis. The control rods are movable longitudinally within the central reflector cylinder. The fuel assemblies are arranged concentrically round the reflector. The cooling medium may be liquid or gaseous and in an alternative form the reflector cylinder is separated from the core by a sleeve which permits the use of a liquid control medium.
