Abstract
1,055,264. Vehicle suspensions. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. Oct. 16, 1963 [July 20, 1962], No. 27942/62. Heading B7D. [Also in Division F2] Two or more fluid spring chambers of equal capacity are connected together, and e.g. to interconnected front and rear wheel suspension mountings of a four-wheel vehicle, to carry the suspension load whereby the stiffness may be varied by the interposition of a solenoid operated fluid control valve (see Division F2), enabling one of the spring chambers to be disconnected whereby the suspension stiffness is doubled. With a heavily laden vehicle, a spring-loaded servo valve, associated with the solenoid operated valve, yields whenever the pressure in the isolated chamber exceeds that in the working chamber, e.g. during rebound movements and the influx of fresh medium into the working side of the system automatically increases the riding height. The valve may be opened and closed at any time as required in order to achieve the desired suspension setting whilst the vehicle is in motion.
