Abstract

1,188,453. Self-levelling suspension units. HOESCH A.G. 13 Feb., 1968 [14 Feb., 1967], No. 6979/68. Heading F2S. In a self-levelling hydropneumatic pistoncylinder suspension unit having two valvecontrolled channels by which one end of the cylinder can communicate through the piston with the other end of the cylinder, only one of the channels can be open at any one time and only one direction of flow is possible in each channel. The direction of flow is always such as to return the piston to a central position. In Fig. 1 the chambers 5 and 6 on opposite sides of the piston 2 are each filled with liquid maintained under pressure by respective gas chambers 15. The piston and its rod 3 are hollow and are fitted over a solid rod 4 in one end of the cylinder body. The throughpiston flow paths are: (a) groove 17 in rod 3, bore 24 in piston 2, valve 22; and (b) groove 16, bore 23, valve 21. On downward movement of piston 2 from the position shown, only path (a) is open and flow takes place from chamber 5 to chamber 6. On upward movement of the piston path (a) is closed and path (b) is opened for flow in the opposite direction. Damping is effected by the valves 28, which may be supplemented by unvalved damping ports 25a. In Fig; 2 the piston-rod is solid and the opposite flow paths are both wholly within the piston. Spring loaded rings 29, 30 are so arranged that each can close one but net the other of the channels 23, 24. Movement of the piston to either side of the central position shown compresses one of the ring loading springs 31, 32 and moves the piston out of the range of action of the other. This firmly closes one of the channels 23, 24 and opens, the other. Figs,. 3, to 5 (not shown) depict details of the piston and associated rings of Fig. 2. The piston is made in several superposed generally circular parts and is fitted with axially projecting plungers which, when one ring moves to its channel closing position, positively displace the opposite ring away from the piston.
