In apparatus for cutting through and removing pattern float threads in fabrics, means are provided for feeding the fabric in a tensioned state past a first cross-cutting device for cutting through the float threads and past a second cutting device for removing said threads, the first cross-cutting device being located so that it lies perpendicular to the fabric surface and extends across the width of the fabric and comprising a stationary lower blade and a movable upper blade, the ends of the lower blade being rounded and extending nearer to the fabric than the leading edge of the upper blade; and the second cutting device comprising a cylindrical shearing knife which has helically extending cutting edges and which co-operates with a stationary cutting bed. The machine shown comprises, generally, a frame 1 housing means for conducting a fabric through the machine and float thread cutting and removing means, and an air extractor 2 surmounting the frame 1. Fabric is unwound from roll 5 over a friction roller 6 which keens the fabric taut and thence passes around roller 7 to a cross cutting device 8. 9, 10 which cuts the pattern float threads. The fabric then runs over guide roller 11 to a cutting bed 13, which can be raised or lowered under the control of hydraulic means, where the loose thread ends are removed by a rotating shearing cylinder 3 having spiral blades which co-operate with fixed blade 4. The shearing blades have openings for the passage therethrough of suction air and the slot of the air extractor is so located that the loose ends are erected on the foundation weave shortly before the fabric passes over the cutting bed. After removal of the loose ends the fabric runs over a guide roller 14 to drawing roller 15 and means 17 which rolls up the fabric at 5. Fig. 2, (not shown), shows the cross-cutting device in detail. The ends of bottom blades 8 project beyond the ends of the upper blades 9 and are rounded to prevent catching of the fabric, and an air extractor duct 10 is provided. In another embodiment duct 10 encloses the cutting device and in another embodiment means in the form of a comb with reflexed teeth are provided for holding down the fabric, a reciprocating or endless band blade operating in the trough formed by the teeth.
