Abstract
1,054,988. Golf-practising apparatus. M. R. SPEISER. Aug. 4, 1964 [May 25, 1964], No. 31129/64. Heading A6D. In a projector for use in a golf-practising range such as that disclosed in Specification 1,051,043 the force and direction of a stroke delivered to a ball are signalled to a computer controlling the operation of a projector to project a spot of light representing the ball on to a screen bearing a representation of a golf course. The projector comprises an iris diaphragm 13 which is computer-controlled in response to the force of the stroke delivered to the ball to vary the size of the projected spot of light. From the diaphragm, the light beam passes through tube 52 in which there is mounted a mirror 76 for deflecting the beam on to the screen. The tube is mounted in the projector casing for rotation about a horizontal axis to deflect the beam vertically, and the mirror is mounted for rotation about an axis which is perpendicular to said horizontal axis, to vary the lateral position of the projected light beam on the screen. Rotation of the tube and mirror is effected by electric motors, computer-controlled in response to the drive characteristics imparted to the ball. The speed of operation of the iris diaphragm is automatically varied inversely with the speed of the vertical deflection of the light beam, to give an accurate simulation of distance.
