Abstract

[Also in Division B8] The tractor of a tractor and semi-trailer combination is provided with a device for loading and unloading the semi-trailer, when disconnected from the tractor, the device comprising a pair of interconnected telescopic jibs 22, 36 adapted to be luffed about an axis 26 behind the tractor cab by hydraulic rams 28 and pivotally supporting a fork with detachable tines 53. The fork is pivoted about the axis 44 by hydraulic rams 48 and the jib sections 36 are extended and retracted by rams mounted within the sections 22. The six rams are controlled by three levers of a valve 30 and the two levers controlling the rams 28, 48 may be interconnected by linkage to maintain the fork arms horizontal during luffing of the jibs. The jibs may be mounted so as to be rotatable about a vertical axis. The loading and unloading device may be used to assist in getting the tractor out of muddy areas by pivoting the fork down about the axis 44 and then retracting the rams 28 to raise the rear wheels from the ground. On extending the jibs, the tractor is rolled forward on its front wheels.
