Abstract

In a method of bending glass sheets in which two elongated flat sheets of glass 20, 21 (Fig. 2, not shown), superimposed one upon the other, are supported at their end marginal edge portions substantially horizontally above the shaping surface of a bending mould 19 and passed through a heating chamber, with their longitudinal axes normal to their path of movement, and in which the sheets are heated to a temperature sufficient to cause them to bend by gravity into contact with the shaping surface, the end edges only of the flat sheets are cooled as they pass through the heating chamber and just prior to the point at which the sheets begin to bend. The cooling is effected by directing a stream of air 38 (Fig. 3, not shown), from nozzles 34, arranged about 3 inches from the sheet edges 39, under a relatively low pressure, e.g. 2 or 3 inches water column. and at atmospheric temperature.
