A tube bending machine comprises a chuck for holding the tube, a forming roller for bending the tube, and a programming device which includes a disc with switching elements and can be used to control the movements of the chuck along and about the axis of the tube and also to control the forming roller. A tube 6 to be bent is gripped in a chuck 5 which is moved axially by a lead screw 19 to feed the tube against an adjustable bending roller 27, the tube being supported internally by a mandrel. The roller 27 is carried by a lever 30 moved by a rack 31. The axial movement of the chuck 5 and the position of the roller 27 is controlled by adjustable switch elements 46 set in grooves 45 of a rotary control disc 44. After a bend has been formed the chuck 5 is rotated by means 23, 25 also controlled by the switch elements 46 so that the succeeding bend is made in a different plane.
