Abstract

1,054,567. Spinning yarns. MONSANTO CO. Oct. 30, 1964 [Nov. 12, 1963], No. 44410/ 64. Headings D1F and D1W. A zero-twist yarn of circular cross-section is composed of straight, uncrimped filaments, e.g. of nylon, polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane, vinyl polymers and copolymers, polyacrylonitrile, in parallel contiguous relation and cohered at random points along the length of the yarn whereby the yarn has unifilar properties. The filaments, particularly if freshly drawn, may be relaxed or relieved of latent overstrain so as to reduce tending to retract: they may be of circular cross-section, or multilobal and/or hollow. The unifilar property is imparted to the yarn by false-twisting it as it is forwarded, applying a small amount of a liquid evanescent solvent thereof while the yarn is so twisted, untwisting, then heating the yarn to dissipate the action of the solvent, and collecting the yarn, usually under minimum tension. Examples of the solvent are specified. As shown, untwisted yarn or a bundle of incompletely oriented filaments, as supplied directly from the filament spinning machine or from a wound package, is passed to feed rolls 2, around a snubbing pin 3 (which may be heated) thence around draw and separator rolls 4 and 5 rotated at such speed in relation to the speed of rolls 2 as to stretch the yarn. As the yarn progresses along rolls 4 and 5 it is cooled and the tension therein decreases with each succeeding wrap. Yarn is led from roll 4 in a figure of eight path in a reverse wrap around roll 4 and a heated roll 7 so that it is frictionally engaged by a flange 6 and slightly false-twisted thereby. The twist runs towards roll 4 and the liquid solvent is applied to the yarn as it brushes across the surface of a wick 8. The yarn is heated by contact with roll 7, so that the untwisting yarn is dried to dissipate the action of the solvent, and then cooled by renewed contact with the roll 4 on each passage on a figure of eight path. Yarn leaving roll 7 receives a finish or lubricant from a wick applicator 14 and is advanced, e.g. by another pair of feed rolls (not shown) under low tension around a guide roll 10 to be wound, without twisting, into a package 13.
