Abstract

1,054,244. Succinic acid half ester derivatives. K. R. DUTTON, W. B. REINISCH, and DUTTON & REINISCH Ltd. June 10, 1963 [June 19, 1962], No. 23466/62. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises succinic acid derivatives of the formula wherein R is a C 9 to C 13 alkyl radical, n is an integer from 1 to 6, one of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is a H atom and the other is either -SO 3 X or -OSO 3 X, where X and Y, which may be the same or different, each represents NH 4 , H, organic base or alkali metal atom. The sulphonate derivatives may be prepared by condensing maleic anhydride with the appropriate ethylene oxide condensate of a fatty alcohol to provide a product which is then treated with an appropriate sulphite, e.g. sodium sulphite. In the examples, a condensate of lauryl alcohol and ethylene oxide is reacted with maleic anhydride and then with sodium sulphite, the resulting solution which is slightly acidic may be rendered less acidic by the addition of NaOH. The compounds may be used in pharmaceutical, shampoo or cosmetic preparations.
