Abstract
1.053.791. Coated steel Danels. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 10. 1962 [Dec. 12, 1961]. No. 44417/61. Heading B2K. [Also in Division C3] Surfaces of phosphated steel panels and panels primed with styrenated alkyd resin. alkyd/nitrogen resin and epoxy resin are coated by applying thereto polymer dispersions in organic liquids, e.g. petroleum ether, in which the polymer particles consist of polymethyl methacrylate containing in the outer layers thereof as adhesion promoters copolymerized units of 4-vinylpyridine. 2-methyl-5- vinylpyridine or unsaturated esters or amides of the formula in which R is H or CH 3 , X is alkylene and either Y is -O- and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are CH 3 , or O || Y is -CNR<SP>111</SP> and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are CH 3 or C 2 H 5 and R<SP>111</SP> is H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 . The polymer dispersions are stablized by the presence of a material solvated by the organic solvent and with which the methyl methacrylate graft or block polymerizes during the formation of the dispersions (see Division C3). Also present in the polymer dispersions may be pigments. eg. titanium dioxide and bone black, and plasticizers, e.g. isobutyl sextol and butyl hexyl phthalates. The coatings are applied by spraying and are then air dried, followed by stoving at 127‹C.
