Abstract

In a process for the continuous production of mouldings from polyamides, a mixture of lactams having six to fourteen ring carbon atoms, alkaline catalysts and activators is fed into a mould cavity 1 (Fig. 1, not shown), the heated upper portion of which is closed at the bottom by an axially movable closure 3, polymerization is initiated above the closure, and as the moulding 10 is formed (Fig. 2, not shown), it is lowered at a rate corresponding to the rate of polymerization by lowering the closure 3, the polymerization mixture being continuously metered to the upper end of the mould cavity. Preferably the closure 3 is lowered by means of a threaded shaft 4 detachably secured to the closure and engaging in a pivotable variable drive 6. When the moulding 10 issues below the mould cavity 1, the shaft 4 is detached, the drive 6 swung out of the way, and the moulding is advanced by shaped rollers 11. The upper end of the mould cavity may be closed by a cover 8, and the polymerization carried out in inert gas under super-atmospheric pressure. Heating and cooling means 2 may be provided. The mould cavity may have an axial curvature, the closure being withdrawn by cable traction (Fig. 3, not shown). By suspending a suitably shaped displacement member in the mould cavity, hollow sections may be prepared. The walls of the mould may be coated with P.T.F.E. or silicone rubber. Suitable lactams include caprolactam, oenanthic lactam, capric lactam, laurolactam or C-substituted derivatives of these lactams. Many examples of alkaline catalysts and activators are given. An alkaline catalyst may be dissolved in one portion of the lactam, an activator in another, and the two portions mixed together immediately prior to entering the mould cavity. Polymerization is preferably carried out at 100-160‹ C.
