[Also in Division B8] A tube or bag 65 (Fig. 10, not shown) is closed by placing a U-shaped clip over the gathered end and then applying pressure to bend the prongs of the clip inward to embrace the neck as a helix (see Fig. 10). The prongs may be bent inwards using anvils 55, 56 (Fig. 7, not shown) having guide channels 60, 61, pressure being applied to the flat part 45 by means of a crimping blade 44. In one arrangement (Fig. 1, not shown), the clips are stacked in a guide 48 and are forced along the curved portion 51 and on to the ledge 52 (Fig. 3, not shown) by the weight of the column. The vertical plane defined by the portion 51 and the ledge 52 is at an acute angle to the vertical plane defined by the crimping blade 44, so that as the clip leaves the ledge 52 it is askew to the crimping blade 44 (see Fig. 4, not shown). With the handle 38 as shown the gathered end of the bag or tube is placed in the recess 67. When the handle is lowered to the position 38a the crimping blade 44 is lowered by a pneumatic ram, pushing the clip 45 down the track 54 so that it straddles the neck of the bag, and then bending the prongs of the clip, as described above, on the anvils 55, 56. In a second embodiment, the ram which carries the crimping blade 44 is operated automatically when a bag depresses a pivoted plate at the bottom of the recess 67. A guillotine simultaneously cuts off the end of the bag beyond the clip. A channel 54 (Fig. 4) may guide the bag neck into position.
