Abstract

1,053,529. Lubricants; fuels. ROHM & HAAS CO. Nov. 19, 1963, No. 45648/63. Headings C5F and C5G. [Also in Division C3] As additives which impart dispersancy to lubricating and fuel oils there are used oilsoluble copolymers made by polymerizing (A) methyl and/or ethyl acrylate or a mixture of said monomers with less than 50% by weight of one or more other monovinylidene compounds in the presence of (B) a preformed polymer of monomeric material containing more than 50% by weight of one or more C 12 -C 24 alkyl acrylates or methacrylates (see Division C3). Specified lubricants are mineral lubricating oils and synthetic lubricating oils such as dialkyl dialkanoates, e.g. 2-ethylhexyl sebacate, phosphate and silicate esters, silicone fluids and polymers of ethylene and propylene oxides. Fuel oils specified are gasoline, jet fuels and burner oils. The oil compositions may contain additional ingredients, e.g. zinc dialkyldithiophosphates and mixtures thereof alkaline earth basic petroleum sulphonates, basic barium salts of nitrogen-containing carboxylic acids, barium salts of carboxylic acids and calcium salts of alkylphenol sulphides. Specified additive copolymers are made by polymerizing ethyl acrylate and mixtures thereof with laurylmyristyl methacrylate and dodecyl methacrylate in the presence of poly-(lauryl-myristyl methacrylate), poly-(dodecyl methacrylate), poly- (lauryl - myristyl - co - cetyl - stearyl methacrylate), poly-(lauryl acrylate) and poly- (lauryl - myristyl - co - isooctyl methacrylate).
