Abstract

1,053,443. Universal joints. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. May 13, 1965 [May 14, 1964], No. 20255/65. Heading F2U. To reduce the effective diameter, for a given loading, of a double universal joint of the type comprising an intermediate ring 26 to which are pivoted, in bearing bushes 25 therein, trunnion-pins 24 formed on hollow rectangular yokes 16 also pivoted at right-angles to the pins 24 by bearings 15 on pins 14 press-fitted in shaft ends 12, 13 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), the intermediate ring 26 is slotted each end to form channels 28 through which the trunnionpins 24 of the rectangular yokes 16 may be passed during joint assembly, the bushes 25 being inserted radially into the ring 26 at 32 on the pins 24 and clamped and located by bolts 37 transversely fitted across the slots. Integral bridge pieces 29, extending radially beyond the channels 28, together with the bolts 37 maintain the strength of the bearing bush eyes 32 in the ring 26. The shaft ends 13 and rectangular yokes 16 may be press-fitted between the inner faces of the yokes 16 (Fig. 2, not shown) and the inner faces of the ring 26 respectively, washers and lubricant seals 20, 21 and 35, 36 being provided each side, lubricant being introduced through nipples 23 &c. Chamfers 17 on the shaft ends 13 permit greater angularity of joint movement. The channels 28 may be fitted with covers or intermediate pieces (not shown) secured to the bolts.
