Abstract

1,053,441. Heating air by exhaust gases. P. MASSJVK. June 18, 1965 [April 15, 1965], No. 16264/65. Heading F4S. [Also in Division F1] A combined air heater and engine exhaust gas silencer includes a heat exchanger 8 in which the exhaust gases give up heat to a forced flow of air. The unit shown is contained in a casing 1 at each side of which are formed header chambers 6, 9 respectively conducting air to and from the heat exchanger tubes 7. The engine exhaust gases pass through a perforated inlet nozzle 3 into a first silence chamber 4 packed with glass wool or other mineral fibre (not shown). From the chamber 4 the gases flow over the heat exchanger tubes to second and similar silence chamber 12 and thence to a collecting chamber 13 leading to an exhaust outlet pipe 14. The heat exchanger tubes may be packed with copper gauze. The air may be forced through the heat exchanger by means located either in the cold air inlet pipe 5 or in the heated air outlet pipe 10.
