The main metal frame of metal slidable sashes in parallel planes comprises U-section members which have the same configuration having a flat inner surface with spaced grooves 20 and being welded at each corner of the frame with a mitre or butt joint, a guide on the upper member of the sash co-operating with the groove 20 of the main frame and runner rail 46 on the lower main frame member guiding the rollers 56 of sashes 44, these runner rails 46 comprising U-shaped members engaging, by means of projections 50 under projections 22, in the grooves 20. Buffer strips of U-section may be similarly clamped in the styles Fig. 4 (not shown) of the frame. A transom is formed by placing two similar members back to back as shown and are positioned by projections 24, 40 and offset projections 38 on the legs of the U-section of one member to accommodate and locate the legs of the U-section of the other member, the leg 24 forming with a symmetrically disposed shorter leg 26 a groove, through which passes a screw to secure the two members together. Such transoms may be employed to secure a panel 68 by means of glazing beads 70. Drainage holes 69 and 69 a are provided in the transom members and an inclined shank 66 66 may be provided in the hollow transom and may have a sealing strip 67 for sealing the joint between the abutting projections 24, 40. The vertical meeting rails (not shown) interengage in the closed positions of the sashes, each rail having interengaging arms 76 with leaf spring strips 84 acting to press the arms together.
