Abstract

1,053,295. Hydraulic transmission of power, and control; mechanical relay. JOHN BOYD & CO. (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Nov. 22, 1963 [Aug. 28, 1962], No. 32933/62. Headings F2C, F2D and F2X. Control of a variable-ratio hydraulic transmission, comprising a fixed capacity motor 3 driving the winding drum 4 of a crane and connected to a variable-capacity swashplate, piston, &c. type pump 1 powered by a continuously operating electric &c. motor 2, is effected by a control shaft 13, geared to the carrier of bevel planet pinions 8, 9, the planet pinions meshing a first sun gear 11 rotated by the driven drum and a second sun gear 12 rotated by an electric or hydraulic auxiliary motor 19 having a hand-operated speed-adjusting lever 20. The motor 3 drives through gearing 5 to the winding drum 4, and the auxiliary motor 19, which gives a continuouslyvariable speed and is reversible, drives through gearing 18 to the sun gear 12. On actuation of the hand-lever 20, the auxiliary motor 19 starts to drive and, through the gearing 7 ... 12, so actuates the pump control 13 that the pump 1 begins to supply liquid to the motor 3, and therefore drives the drum 4. The drum 4 in turn drives the sun gear 11 in such a direction as to reduce outflow from the pump 1. The speed of rotation of the drum 4 accordingly depends on how far the hand lever 20 is turned. When the hand lever 20 is returned to its " stop " position, the output of the pump 1 is reduced to zero; should any creep of the driven drum 4 then take place, rotation of the associated sun gear 11 actuates the control of the pump 1 in such a direction as will cause the motor 3 to rotate and oppose the creep.
