Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5 and C7] Safety panes suitable for incorporation in aircraft, motor and railway vehicles etc., and for glazing in general comprise at least one sheet formed from a high molecular weight linear polycarbonate of one or more aromatic dihydroxy compounds, e.g. bis-phenylol alkanes, one or both surfaces being provided with a scratch-resistant coating. The coating may be a vapour-deposited layer of silicon oxide-SiO x , where x has a value between 1 and 2, or it may be a glass sheet to which the polycarbonate sheet is slidably connected, either within edge-framing or by an adhesive such as polyvinyl butyrate, an epoxide resin, a silicone resin or a styrenised-polyester resin, particularly one where the ratio polyester: styrene is at least 4:1. Threads or fabrics, e.g. of metal or glass may be interposed between the constituent layers, or they may be moulded into the polycarbonate sheets. The polycarbonate and the glass sheets may be transparent or translucent, clear or coloured, patterned, cloudy or matted, and the product may be plane or curved. In an example, a windscreen is described which comprises a polycarbonate sheet to one surface of which is vapour deposited a layer of silicon oxide and to the other surface of which is bonded a glass sheet. The products are stated to be lighter and more resilient than laminated glass panes, to provide protection against splintering on breaking of glass components, to be transparent to light but opaque to ultra violet and infra red radiations, and to be heat-insulating; thick layers of polycarbonate are stated to be bullet proof.
