Abstract

105,286. Wales, E. S. June 16, 1916. Projectiles.-Consists in an explosive projectile provided on its exterior with barbed wire or the like, which is distributed when the projectile explodes, so as to form entanglements. The projectile shown comprises a head 2 containing an explosive charge 13, and a stem 1 adapted to fit the barrel of a trench mortar, or the like, The head has lateral projections 3 around which the barbed wire is coiled, the outer end of each coil being secured to the end of a stud 5 which passes through a rifled hole in the corresponding projection 3. Each stud has a percussion cap 10 adapted to fire the charge 13 through a passage 11; or a time-fuse may be employed. When the charge is exploded, the studs 5 are driven out of the rifled holes, and the rotary motion imparted to them untwists the wire coils. The wire may be laid on in concentric coils spaced apart by suitable members.
