Abstract

1,052,739. Pipe couplings. NATIONAL AERONAUTICS & SPACE ADMINISTRATION. Aug. 18, 1965, No. 35483/65. Heading F2G. A coupling particularly for cryogenic liquids comprises a ring 61 having a spherical sealing surface 62 mounted on a sleeve 64 and connected by a bellows 68 to an adapter 66, and a pipe 20 provided with a frusto-conical sealing surface 18 formed with a groove 28 in which is disposed a sealing ring 30 of square cross-section and presenting a knife-edge 32 to the surface 62. The sleeve 66 carries a hub 54 in screwed engagement with a hub 44 and rotatable by a hand wheel 56. The sleeve is pivotable on a pin 42 and carries a mechanically or pneumatically-operated, quick-release clamping device 16 for securing the sleeve to the wall 26 of, e.g., a rocket or space vehicle. By rotating the hand wheel the surface 62 is brought into engagement with the ring 30 and the flow of pressure fluid causes axial expansion of the bellows to apply an additional sealing force between the surface and the ring.
