Abstract
1,052,625. Colouring aluminium. MARTINMARIETTA CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1964 [Jan. 18, 1963], No. 1603/64. Heading B6G. [Also in Division C3] The anodized surface of aluminium is coloured by printing a paper using the off-set process with a dye, placing the printed surface close to or in contact with the anodized surface, applying heat sufficient to sublime the dye on to the anodized surface, and sealing the latter by, e.g., treating with boiling water. Preferably, the anodizing is effected by sulphuric acid. The dye has no noticeable sublimation below 120‹ F., a sublimation half-life of less than 75 seconds at 500‹ F., and a sublimation half-life within the temperature range 140‹ to 500‹ F. (preferably 250‹ to 425‹ F.) of from 0À5 to 75 seconds. Preferably, the dye has a 1À3 indandione group; or is in an azo dye having a hydroxyl group in the position ortho to the azo group; or is an anthraquinone dye substituted in the 1, 4, 5 or 8 positions by hydrogen, a hydroxyl group, an amido group having an active hydrogen atom, or an amine group having an active hydrogen atom and either another hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon radical. The dye is mixed with a binder to make a printing ink, the binder being left on the paper and including calcium carbonate, linseed oil of heavy and medium viscosities and a mixture of linseed oil and an alkyd of equimolar proportions of glycerin and isophthalic acid.
