Abstract

1,052,392. Pallet loading machines; stacks. DIGITAL CONTROL SYSTEMS Inc. April 29, 1963, No. 16704/63. Heading B8C. [Also in Division G4] A pallet loader is controlled by logical operations carried out in a magnetic drum computer, these operations involving the use of input data from photo-cells on the loader, and stored programme signals acting to count the building up of the stack and take into account overload conditions &c. before operating motors and solenoids on the loader. As shown, rectangular packages 2 x 1 in plan are received from a conveyer 100, orientated as shown by guide 102 on a conveyer 101, turned through 90 degrees where required by a solenoid-controlled pin 103 and sensed at 104 by a photo-cell for counting a row. (Successive rows of 3 and 6 are built up as shown, with alternate layers having a mirror image pattern.) When a row is full, motor 87 is energized to push it against the part-completed layer and this operation is sensed by a photo cell at 121 to count the rows until a layer is complete, when plate 108 is slid to the right by motor 88 allowing the layer to fall on to the partly completed stack beneath, which is then lowered by motor 93. The fall of a layer is sensed by photo-cell 114 and when the stack is complete the pallet is lowered on to chain conveyers 116, shifted to the right and a new pallet plate delivered from stack 117 for lifting to its initial position. Should the conveyer fill, a signal is generated to stop operation, and conveyers are also stopped while completed rows and layers are being dealt with, and when overload of any motor occurs, by use of overload and limit switches on the motors. The Specification describes in detail the signals generated. and logical operations performed.
