Abstract

1,052,338. Electric motors having permanent magnets; control of D.C. motors. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Aug. 24, 1965 [Oct. 21, 1964], No. 42871/64. Headings H2A and H2J. [Also in Division A4] In a windscreen wiper motor for road vehicles, comprising a housing supporting permanent magnets and, rotatable relatively thereto, a rotor supporting the motor winding to which current is fed through a commutator, three brushes 11 . . . 13 engage the commutator in an arrangement such that direct current applied to different brush pairs operates the motor at different speeds. Selection is by a driver-operated switch 16 which in the low speed position shown energizes the brushes 11, 12 from supply terminals 14, 15 connected to the vehicle battery. An operation of the switch to reverse, Fig. 2 (not shown), the operative conditions of movable contact arms 19, 20 substitutes brush 13, of smaller circumferential length, for brush 12, to use less of the winding and provide high speed operation. Further operation of the switch to the off position, Fig. 3 (not shown), reverts to low speed conditions until the wipers reach their parking position, whereupon a contact arm 25 engages a contact 26 to open the supply circuit and short.circuit the winding to provide braking.
