Abstract

1,052,240. Endless conveyers. SOLAR THOMSON ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 17. 1963 [Dec. 24, 1962], No. 48550/62. Heading B8A. An endless conveyer belt 16 is driven by frictional engagement with endless belts 10 each of which is trained around drums 11-15 and driven by a motor (not shown) which drives the drum 15. To allow for unequal loading or unequal driving of the conveyer over its length, gearing 17 couples adjacent drums 11, 15 of adjacent driving belts 10. By this gearing, excess power at lightlyloaded points is transferred through the driving belts and the gears to other points without being delivered to the conveyer belt. Thus the conveyer belt may be lightly constructed and slipping at some drive points overcome. The engaging faces of the conveyer belt and the driving belts are formed with meshing patterns, e.g. longitudinal grooves 22, which increase the frictional engagement and prevent lateral movement of the conveyer belt relative to the driving belts. The edge portions 18 of the uppe flight of the conveyer belt are supported on idler troughing rollers 19, 21 which adjust themselves in dependence on the load. To more positively locate the conveyer belt, some or all of the drums 11-15 may be formed with circumferential ribs 27, Fig. 5 (not shown), the face of each driving belt 10 being formed with longitudinal grooves 28 engageable by the ribs 27. In a modification. Fig. 7 (not shown), a single driving-belt 31 is trained around a series of driving drums 32 spaced apart in tandem. Each drum 32 is driven by a motor (not shown). In lieu of inclined idler rollers, the edge portions of the conveyer belt may be provided with upstanding flanges 25 to form a trough, Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively, the belt may have reinforcing straps 26 of spring steel to provide a trough.
