Abstract
1,052,187. Reels; endless conveyers; packaging-machines. R. E. PRAT. Sept. 12, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 36015/63. Headings B8A, B8C and B8M. [Also in Division D1] Filled bobbins, each having means to secure the loose end of the winding, are removed from a spinning &c. machine by a device mounted on a carriage running on rails along the machine, e.g. as in Specification 884,250, and comprising means for transferring the bobbins from vertical positions into transverse compartments on a horizontal endless conveyer, from which they are discharged on to a horizontal platform having an opening to deliver the bobbins to successive compartments of a storage box, means for controlling the delivery of the bobbins so that each compartment receives a number corresponding to its capacity, and means for moving the platform relatively to the box for bringing successive compartments beneath the opening. Doffed bobbins 4, Fig. 1, not shown, are guided at 3 into transverse compartments 6 on a conveyer 5 driven by a pulley 7 rotated from the wheels of the carriage as it runs along the rails. As the bobbins round the pulley 7 they are guided by a plate 34 and fall on to a platform 14, Fig. 3, not shown, having a ramp 17 and an opening 18 above a compartment of a storage box 16. The platform is constantly urged to move in the same direction as the lower run of the conveyer, but is held by a detent 29 engaging one of a series of stops 32. When a compartment is filled, the detent is raised to allow the platform to move until the detent engages the next stop, when opening 18 is above the next compartment. To this end, the detent is on the end of a pivoted lever urged by a spring 31 so that a projection 33 engages a cam 27. The cam has teeth 26 equal in number to the bobbins required to fill one compartment and which are engaged by a pawl 25 rocked by a linkage 20 each time a pin 22 is engaged by the rounded end of a passing bobbin. So that the platform 14 can increase in length as it advances and support the bobbins on the lower run of the conveyer, its trailing end is composed of a number of plates hinged to one another and folded one on another which successively unfold as they leave the guide 34. In preparing the cops to be collected by the apparatus, at the end of the build, Fig. 4, not shown, a reserve is wound at 36, followed by coils 40 on the outside of the package 40 and a few turns at 37 on the spindle. When the bobbin is doffed, the yarn breaks in the region 38 leaving a loose end. To secure this end and to assist breakage in the case of strong yarns, a ring 41, Fig. 7, not shown, having spring clips 42, is placed on the base of the bobbin, so that when the coils 40 are wound the yarn is gripped between the coils 40 and the turns 37. When the bobbin is doffed, the yarn is severed at, and is gripped by, the ring.
