Abstract

1,051,935. Aqueous clay and/or bentonite suspensions. KNAPSACK A.G. Sept. 30, 1965 [Oct. 2, 1964], No. 39787/64. Heading C1A. Aqueous clay and/or bentonite suspensions having a given density are prepared by feeding clay and/or bentonite in particulate form in suspension in an aqueous medium withdrawn from and recycled to a vessel provided with means of agitation at such a rate that a homogeneous suspension is formed by intense stirring within said vessel, the feed continuing until the suspension reaches the desired density as determined by hydrometer testing. The solid feed may be in the form of worms 8 mm. wide and 40-100 mm. long. The volume of suspension recycled per hour may be 2-3 times the volume of water required to form the suspension. In a continuous process two or more vessels are employed and a movable feed line enables one vessel to be charged while others are being emptied.
