Abstract
1,051,678. Hydraulic couplings. MORSE CHAIN CO. Jan. 29, 1965 [Feb. 3, 1964], No. 4114/65. Heading F2C. A fluid shear coupling comprises a driving member 25, 26 defining an annular chamber 32 and angularly spaced reservoir chambers 33 and carrying shear plates 40 interleaved but spaced from shear plates 42 on a driven member 12 keyed at 19 to shaft 20; chambers 33 house resilient sealed cellular members 50 which become compressed when centrifugal forces on the fluid reach a certain value whereby fluid passes from chamber 32 so interrupting the transmission of drive when the driving member reaches a high speed. The members 50 expand with rising temperature to urge the fluid into chamber 32; the coupling being used to drive a fan in a water-cooled engine of a vehicle.
