Abstract

1,051,595. Inductor alternators. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 7, 1963 [Aug. 10, 1962], No. 7248/66. Divided out of 1,051.594. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F1] In an inductor alternator comprising a rotor 40 mounted to rotate relatively to a stator 45 the rotor and stator providing magnetic cores 42, 47 affording a toroidal path for flux produced by a field coil 46 surrounding the rotor axis parts of which path are through a number of circumferentially spaced rotor core poles 43 and a number of circumferentially spaced stator core, laminated teeth having wrapped about them armature windings 48, the path includes two air gaps between the rotor and stator, one normal to the axis, and the other, 52, of which a section through the axis has at least a portion 52a oblique to the axis to produce an axial thrust on the rotor opposite to that of the first gap. The rotor is mounted and formed on the end of a stub shaft 15 having no bearings other than those of an associated transmission or gear housing 14 which may be driven by a gas turbine, or other associated machine, e.g. a compressor, and the resultant of the two axial thrusts offsets or balances that of the turbine or machine.
