Abstract
1,051,594. Inductor alternators. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 7,1963 [Aug. 10, 1962], No. 31240/63. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F1] A turbine or a varied type compressor 77 is combined with an inductor alternator 76 which includes a rotor 80 having a shaft 78 extending through an opening in a stator 82 and having at one end a disc formed on one face with a number of circumferentially spaced poles, the stator and rotor providing magnetic cores affording a toroidal flux path for flux produced by a field coil 83 surrounding the shaft, part of the path being through the poles and part through circumferentially spaced laminated teeth of the stator which have armature windings 85 wrapped about them and are separated from the poles by an air gap lying in a plane normal to the axis; the rotor also has, on the back of the face presented to the air gap, a number of blades 92 in a housing 94 to form the turbine or compressor. The blades are either integral with the rotor, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), or formed on a wheel 91 welded to the rotor, and the housing 94 forms an inlet 93 and an outlet 96. The spaces between the poles 86, Fig. 2 (not shown), may be filled with non-magnetic material 87 to provide a smooth periphery 88 which is engaged by a labyrinth seal 90 which alternatively may engage the shaft 78. The compressor air cools the generator.
