Abstract
105,153. British Thomson-Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). June 3, 1916. Motor power plant; driving and transmission mechanism, special applications of.-R elates s to marine turbine installations such as are described in Specification 7829/07. For high speeds, the propeller 7 is driven through reduction gearing 8 by a main turbine 5, and for low speeds, a cruising-turbine 9 is connected in series with, and operates at a higher speed than, the turbine 5, the two turbines being operatively connected by an electro-magnetic device comprising a polyphase induction machine A and a polyphase synchronous machine B. The field magnet 20 of the machine A is keyed to the shaft of the turbine 9 while the armature core 22 is mounted on the shaft of the turbine 5, which carries also the armature core 23 of the synchronous machine B, the field magnet 24 being stationary. A switch 27 controls the excitation of the synchronous machine, and the armature windings 28, 29 are connected by conductors 30 in the shaft, the electric connexions being such as to produce opposite directions of phase-rotation. Where the cruising- turbine runs at twice the speed of the main turbine, half the power of the cruising-turbine is converted into electricaL energy by the induction generator A, and is delivered to the shaft of the main turbine by the synchronous motor B, while the other half is delivered direct to the mainturbine shaft through the torque of the generator A. The steam supply to the turbines may he controlled by a valve 40 connected to a speed governor on the turbine 5 and to a suitable speedcontrol lever, as described in Specification 3026/13. A valve 41 in the admission pipe of the turbine 9 may be connected to a speed governor on this turbine, as described in Specification 3027/13. In a modification, the machine B is arranged between the gearing 8 and the turbine 5.
