Abstract

A mode filter for suppressing higher-order TE on circular-electric modes comprises a waveguide in the form of a circular tube divided by a plane spetum 5, 5a which carries mode conversion means 7, 7a (e.g. rows of slits or indentations) at a position where the axial magnetic field of the desired TE 01 mode is zero and that of the unwanted TE on (n#2) is substantial. Where n = 2, the means 7, 7a are positioned at a distance 0À6276 R from the centre of the waveguide (R is the waveguide radius). The spurious TE on mode is converted to a mode having an axial component of current and this component is suppressed by known means, e.g. by providing the filter with walls of helical or spaced-ring construction or by joining the filter to adjacent waveguide sections of such construction. In addition, the septum 5, 5a may contain a dissipative layer 9b coupled to the waveguide by the rows of slots 7, 7a. The waveguide may be divided in sectors by two or more septa each carrying mode-conversion means.
